Niraj Chepang, an 18-year-old from Thakre Rural Municipality Ward No. 7, Dhading, is a smart and hardworking student. He recently took his Secondary Education Examination (SEE) and has always ranked among the top three students in his class.

Niraj comes from a joint family of eight, including his grandparents, parents, niece, and nephew. His family depends on farming for their livelihood, while his elder brother works at a poultry farm, earning about Rs. 15,000 per month. Due to financial difficulties, Niraj has been living with his aunt and uncle since he was 13 and in Grade 5. His aunt also works in agriculture, and his uncle is a driver.

Despite these challenges, Niraj has done well in school. A need assessment in Grade 8 identified that he needed support to continue his education. Since then, he has been supported by the Unnati project under CEEP. He has received school uniforms, shoes, bags, tracksuits, stationery, and other supplies—helping him stay focused on his studies.

Through Unnati’s livelihood program, his family also received seven goats and has already earned Rs. 7,000 by selling them. This brought some financial relief and hope to the household. Niraj says his entire family is very thankful to Unnati for their support.

“My favorite subject is Accountancy,” Niraj shares. “I want to become an accountant and will join the management stream for further studies. I hope Unnati will continue to support me until I complete my bachelor’s degree.”

Niraj also has a strong sense of community. “I’ve never dreamed of going abroad. I want to stay in Dhading and do something meaningful for my society,” he says with pride.

Niraj Chepang shows how the right support at the right time can help a young person not only dream big but also work toward creating a better future for their entire community.
