Unnati is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, dignified, and supportive educational environment for visually impaired children. A central component of this effort is the Blind Hostel Support Program, which directly addresses the academic, physical, and psychosocial needs of blind and low-vision students. Grounded in thorough needs assessments, the program ensures the provision of tailored resources, including Braille textbooks, tactile learning aids, talking watches and calculators, sanitary kits, winter clothing, and school uniforms. The initiative has further enriched the hostel environment by establishing a fully furnished reading room, a well-stocked library, essential kitchen and bedroom supplies, and furniture. Unnati also supports a computer lab with assistive technologies, a music room, and recreational facilities that contribute to students’ holistic growth, enhancing auditory learning, physical fitness, creativity, and social interaction.
To promote health and well-being, Unnati coordinates with local health centers and the government to conduct monthly health check-ups, ensuring timely medical care and boosting academic participation. Beyond material and medical support, the project emphasizes capacity-building and inclusive practices through mentorship and orientation sessions for hostel staff and teachers. These trainings equip educators with the tools to create responsive, accessible learning spaces that cater to the diverse needs of blind students. Recognizing the importance of digital literacy, Unnati also provides specialized computer classes, empowering students with skills vital for higher education and future employment. Every intervention under the Blind Hostel Support Program is evidence-based, derived from the initial assessments, and continuously monitored for relevance and impact. Through this integrated approach, the program significantly enhances educational access, independence, and life opportunities for visually impaired children, laying the groundwork for a more equitable and inclusive society.
