Unnati, through the Child Education and Empowerment Project (CEEP), is committed to ensuring inclusion, dignity, and access to quality education for visually impaired students. The Blind Hostel Support Program, a key component of CEEP, has been instrumental in addressing the specific needs of blind and low-vision children, enabling them to thrive academically and socially.
Following a comprehensive needs assessment, Unnati identifies and addresses critical requirements for the smooth operation of the Blind Hostel. Support included the provision of the reading room and library materials, kitchen supplies, bedroom essentials, hostel furniture, teaching learning materials, stationery, and teaching materials
Textbooks in Braille, Tactile Teaching Aids, Toys/Modules, student uniforms, winter clothes, and resources for a computer lab, library, sports, and music facilities.
Tailored Educational and Living Support
To foster a more equitable learning environment, visually impaired students receive specialized materials such as Braille paper, talking watches, talking calculators, school uniforms, winter clothes, and sanitary kits equipped with essential hygiene products. Bedding items, mattresses, pillows, and blankets were also provided to enhance comfort and living conditions within the hostel. A fully equipped computer lab, music room, monthly health checkups, and regular sports activities are established to ensure a well-rounded development approach. These components have helped enhance students’ auditory skills, physical fitness, and social interaction while opening up new avenues for learning and expression.
Health and Well-being
Unnati, in collaboration with the local government and health centers, arranges monthly health check-ups for the visually impaired students. These regular screenings ensure that health concerns are addressed promptly, contributing to their overall well-being and academic engagement.
Building Inclusive Classrooms
To ensure sustainable impact, Unnati facilitated mentorship and orientation sessions for blind hostel staff and teachers on supporting blind children and fostering inclusive learning environments. These trainings and sessions empower staff and teachers to deliver lessons that are accessible, supportive, and responsive to the diverse needs of their students.
Digital Empowerment
Recognizing the importance of digital literacy, the project introduced computer classes with assistive technologies specifically tailored to blind students. These sessions are expanding students’ digital skills and preparing them for future academic and employment opportunities.
Evidence-Based and Impactful Interventions
All interventions under the Blind Hostel Support Program are grounded in data from the initial needs assessment, ensuring that the support provided is relevant, targeted, and impactful. By addressing educational, health, and emotional needs, the program significantly enhances the quality of life, independence, and educational achievement of visually impaired children.
